Organic waste constitutes most of the waste generated by the population, with a high recovery potential, both in energy production and in organic correctives that can be used in agriculture.
This waste is already collected selectively in various areas of the country, and this collection started in Lisbon in 2005, with the implementation of the Mais Valor Program, initiated by Valorsul - EGF concessionaire for the region of Lisbon (North).
To make this happen, EGF has 19 organic recovery plants operating in Portugal, ranging from mechanical and biological treatment plants, composting plants and anaerobic digestion plants.
These facilities make it possible to separate packaging and contaminants from the collection of common waste and organic waste, ensuring that they are sent for recycling; the production of organic concealers for agriculture; and energy production, where there is anaerobic digestion of waste.
