During this summer period, the increase in population and tourist activity in the Algarve also translates into greater waste production. To meet this challenge, Algar and municipal teams are making an additional effort, with more people and resources on the ground, reinforcing collection, cleaning and sanitation operations. But this is an effort that requires everyone's collaboration: correctly separating waste and placing it in the appropriate containers are essential steps to keep the region cleaner and more sustainable.
In this context, Algar has an ongoing operational reinforcement for the summer of 2026, with the aim of responding to the significant increase in the production of recyclable waste associated with the bathing season, seasonal and population growth, and the increase in economic and tourist activity.
Among the main measures, the reinforcement of field inspections stands out, through dedicated teams that travel daily through the various municipalities of the region. These teams monitor the condition of the equipment, monitor collection operations, identify situations of irregular waste disposal, and signal the need for intervention, allowing for preventive action and a faster response to identified occurrences.
The selective collection teams in the field have also been reinforced, with the contracting of additional services, in addition to the already normal reinforcement during the summer.
As part of the modernization of the existing infrastructure, ALGAR has also acquired new containers, whose installation will take place in phases until September. This renovation will allow for increased disposal capacity in areas of greatest demand, replacement of old and damaged equipment, and improvement in the quality of service provided.
Cleaning the spaces around the recycling points is another priority defined for this period. To this end, teams dedicated exclusively to collecting waste deposited next to the equipment are in operation, with a special focus on urban, commercial, and beach areas with the highest influx of people. At the same time, the washing of the recycling points has been reinforced, with more frequent cleaning until September.
The plan also includes the installation of 50 assisted tipping containers for glass in the municipalities of Aljezur and Vila do Bispo, which are primarily intended for restaurants and cafes, allowing the direct unloading of smaller, 120-liter containers. This measure will facilitate and increase the capacity for receiving glass, reduce the frequency of equipment refilling, and encourage its recycling at commercial establishments in those municipalities.
