AUGUST 11 2023

Valorsul received, from 1 to 8 August, 81 tonnes more of plastic and metal packaging compared to the same period last year. Undifferentiated maintains values.

Valorsul, the company responsible for the treatment and recovery of urban waste in the Lisbon area and the Western Region, and one of the partners of World Youth Day (WYD) Lisbon 2023 for the Sustainability area, registered a significant increase of 16% in the reception of plastic and metal packaging, from 1 to 8 August, compared to the same period last year, in the five municipalities of Greater Lisbon (Lisbon, Loures, Odivelas, Amadora and Vila Franca de Xira). Regarding the reception of undifferentiated urban waste, the values remained practically unchanged.

When analysed, only the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures, stage of the major events of WYD with the largest influx of pilgrims, there was an increase of 22% in the reception of recyclable material from the yellow ecopoint (plastic and metal) in the six days of the journey and also on 7 and 8 August (dedicated to the cleaning of Campo da Graça / Parque Tejo), compared to the same period of the previous year. Likewise, there was no variation in the reception of undifferentiated urban waste at Valorsul's Energy Recovery Plant.

These results were only possible thanks to the prior cooperation between various entities, namely the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures and the WYD Organising Committee, in the management and containment of waste production, as well as in raising awareness for the correct separation of waste and reinforcing containerisation in all venues where events were taking place, thus demonstrating the commitment and commitment to making this the most sustainable WYD ever.
