Resiestrela - Management, Valorization and Treatment of Urban Waste in the municipalities of Almeida, Belmonte, Celorico da Beira, Covilhã, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Fornos de Algodres, Fundão, Guarda, Manteigas, Meda, Penamacor, Pinhel, Sabugal and Trancoso is a partner University of Beira Interior, under the UNITA project.

Universitas Montium (UNITA) is an alliance of European universities, officially created on November 6, 2020, date of the kick off meeting, and is one of the projects supported by the European Commission with the aim of modernizing Higher Education in the European Union.

This alliance, which brings together approximately 165,000 students and 13,000 employees, is composed of six higher education institutions from five countries: Università Degli Studi di Torino (UNITO) - Italy, which was the leader of the candidacy, University of Beira Interior (UBI) - Portugal, Université de Pau et des Pays de L'Adour (UPPA) - France, Université Savoie Mont-Blanc (USMB) - France, Universitatea de Vest din Timisoara (UVT) - Romania and University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) - Spain.

UNITA's general objectives are based on three strategic axes - circular economy, renewable energies and cultural heritage, which can be summarized in the following points:

  • Build excellent transnational university alliances, exploring innovative didactics co-created by students, employees and local actors, with a long-term vision and transformational impact on education systems;

  • Place universities at the center of the cultural and economic development of their local ecosystems, reducing inequalities between central and peripheral regions through sustainability and the development of rural and mountainous areas;

  • Promote citizenship, identity and European values;

  • Build a European education area to promote a digital and green transition;

  • Promote inclusion policies at all levels;

  • Increase the attractiveness of European educational institutions;

Therefore, Resiestrela will contribute with its local experience and direct actions related to waste management, in a sustainable way.

As a social and environmental reference in this region, Resiestrela aims to promote innovative and value creation processes, through various support infrastructures, namely: Landfill, sorting plants, energy recovery plants, mechanical waste treatment plants and biological, ecocenters and waste transfer stations.

Through these infrastructures. Electric energy is produced from solid waste, which is channeled to the National Electricity Network; forwards plastic / metal, paper / cardboard and glass packaging waste for recycling; and produces organic fertilizers (agricultural production) from organic compounds, which can be applied to the soil.

With this project, Resiestrela will have the opportunity to boost its networking in order to increase its future actions, introducing concepts and technologies suitable for the rational use of energy.
