Valorlis will distribute more than 4500 domestic composters in Batalha, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Ourém, Porto de Mós and Pombal municipalities.

Composting is a sustainable biological process of harnessing organic matter resulting from the preparation of meals such as food rinds, bread crumbs, coffee grounds or vegetable scraps. Soil microorganisms transform this matter into compost which can subsequently be used in agriculture, vegetable gardens or gardens.

The domestic composting program thus reduces the amount of organic waste landfilled and serves as an alternative to soil-damaging chemical fertilizers.

This program, which began in 2007, currently has more than 8800 composters distributed and has already allowed nearly 19,000 tons of waste to be diverted from landfills.
